Waters, sweet and fresh waters: beach holidays in Portico di Romagna
A few months ago, we met an Italian writer, who wrote a very weird but amazing book on how to spend holidays in Italy at the seaside….in the mountains and hills.
As a matter of fact, our hills and mountains are full of rivers and lakes: quiet places in the nature, far away from the crowded atmospheres of the coast and from the noise of the beach.
Acquacheta, the fall of Dante
Fresh and clear waters: this how Dante describes the natural falls of the Acquacheta, which means quiet water. We are in the Montone river valley, going from the medieval borough of Castrocaro up to the lands of Caterina Sforza, until Portico di Romagna and San Benedetto in Alpe. This is the starting point to reach the river of Acquacheta (and the falls), which is a branch of Montone.
There, after a three hours slow itinerary, your view will open up on a little of water mirror, peaceful and quiet. Here, surrounded by a forest of oak, chestnut, and evergreen beech, the crystal clear water of the stream jumps in the rocks with steps, creating games and jets in 90-meter jump.
Water falls, flowing swooping on a smooth rock face in a pool of water almost circular, very deep and bright green, bordered by rocks, almost a natural pool.
Here you will have the chance to stay, have a swim and also have a short pic-nic.
The beach of Portico di Romagna
No joking! Portico has a natural swimming pool with a nice rocky beach, called La Chiusa. Water is clean and clear and in summer time a very well attended place, especially by the locals. Here you can find a protected and very delicate river shrimp, which can live only in very clean waters. La Chiusa is just besides the old upper watermill, and is a common meeting point where the inhabitants of the village meet from late Springtime till September to bath, chat, play, sunbath, relax with a book or to enjoy some water therapy under the waterfall from the old dike of the mill.
